Top Dentists Break 4 Common Dental Myths

The chilly waiting room and the horrific sound of the drill make visiting the dentist a nightmare for most people. While you may think you are overreacting, there are many people who fear a trip to the dentist – an average of 4.3 percent of Americans, according to the Surgeon General’s office. With all of this fear people have put in their heads, it is no wonder so many myths have come up over the years.

Don’t fear dentists anymore and let Cristian Jager Dental break down these common dental myths.

    1. "Bleaching your teeth will cause them to become weak." – Everyone wants pearly white teeth, but some people worry that bleaching products will weaken their teeth. Contrary to popular belief, bleaching products are usually harmless when dentists use them correctly. Bleaching will remove some of the teeth’s pigmentation, but too much can remove the natural pigmentation. While your teeth may appear translucent, this is just a color change and doesn’t mean your teeth are weak.
    2. "When your gums are bleeding, leave them alone." – If you suffer from bleeding gums, the logical thing to do would be to leave them alone, right? Actually, when it comes to your gums, bleeding is a sign that there is plaque around the gum line and they have become irritated. You will need to brush to remove the plaque if you want the bleeding to stop.
    3. "Bad breath means you're a bad brusher." – No one wants to be the person with bad breath, but this doesn’t mean that you are a bad brusher. There are many factors to bad breath including the food you eat and illness. Regular brushing and dentist checkups are important, but sometimes bad breath isn’t really your fault.
    4. "Sugar equals cavities." – This is the logic that most parents instill in their children’s heads, but the amount of sugar you eat actually has nothing to do with tooth decay. In actuality, it is the amount of time the sugar stays on your teeth that contributes to the wearing of the enamel on your teeth. This is why dentists recommend at least twice daily brushing to avoid cavities.
