Among the adult participants in our summer workshop, there were a few nervous faces. “I haven't picked up my instrument in years,” one of them explained. “I'm not really sure where to start.” He felt intimidated around the other musicians who had been in practice for years. Yet with a few classes, his fingers remembered old techniques from past rehearsals and lessons, and the music began to return to him.
We were delighted that these participants, who were initially confused and rusty from lack of practice, started to have such a great time that they registered for the regular semester in the fall. This is the kind of success story that we work towards each day when we instruct and guide students at the French American School of Music.
This summer, the French American School of Music, in an effort to foster artistic and musical expression in the community, has created two new musical workshops for the month of July for adults and children alike.
The World of the Harpsichord: A Discovery Workshop
Session 1 -
Adults: July 9th – 13
For musicians who can play one or more instruments and are comfortable reading in at least one clef, this foray into the wonderful music of the Baroque and Renaissance periods is magical.
Participate in daily improvisation sessions and develop skills in a new instrument, such as the keyboard, violin or recorder. Students will receive harpsichord lessons and will be divided into Beginner, Explorer and Master Learner groups for personal attention.
Tuition: $225 (Private lessons - $45 per ½ hour)
The popular Wine & Music series will take place on Friday, July 13th at 8pm, for those participating in the adult session of The World of the Harpsichord: A Discovery Workshop. Enjoy the melodic beginnings of Western Music with Lisa Terry and Alexandra Dunbar.
Cost: $25 (Donation to FASM)
Session 2 -
Young People: July 16 – 20
For the eager learner who is at least 7 years old and can play the keyboard with both hands together, this class will be a blast. Students should enjoy singing and participating in freestyle performance.
Adult Chamber Music Workshop
5 Sessions & Performance
This workshop is an intensive chamber music course for adult amateurs of any skill level, starting Tuesday, July 24. At the end of the 5 sessions, students will participate in a grand performance with their fellow musicians.
In addition to their workshops, The French American School of Music's summer lessons continue through the end of August, on an a la carte system – attend as many or as few lessons as you would like! For more information, please visit the workshop page.
